This research article discusses the development of a new fingertip sensor for robotic grasping, termed as Pre-touch Dual-modal and Dual-mechanism (PDM2) sensor. The sensor uses pulse-echo ultrasound and optoacoustic modalities to measure distance in close proximity and to detect the type of material and interior structure of the object. The researchers have also developed algorithms to enable the sensor’s functionality. The integration of this sensor into a robotic system can improve the robot’s ability to handle unknown objects, thus enhancing its versatility and adaptability in real-world scenarios.
