The paper provides a systematic literature review of 57 papers to understand the use of decision-making algorithms in homelessness research. It highlights the increasing use of data-driven models by government agencies to determine the risk of homelessness and allocate resources. The study found that only about 16% of the papers investigated model fairness and bias. It also identifies a tension between explainability and ecological validity in predictive risk models and resource allocation models. The paper concludes by discussing research challenges and opportunities for developing human-centered algorithms in the area of homelessness.
