This article presents a new extensible Robotic Language (XRL) designed to improve the user experience of Robotic Process Automation (RPA) tools. The authors argue that the current XML-based languages used by RPA tools are not user-friendly and lack readability. They conducted an exploratory study comparing the notation of three business processes using their XRL language and two languages used by leading RPA solutions. The study results indicate that the new XRL language is promising in terms of increasing the readability of the language, thus reducing the time needed to automate business processes. The authors suggest that making the code more human-friendly could empower employees to edit and develop automation tasks on their own, thereby reducing the need for costly market solutions.
