The paper proposes a modification to Proof-of-Work (PoW) protocols, named ADESS, to deter double-spend attacks in blockchain. It introduces two novel features: a criteria for identifying an attacker chain by observing the temporal sequence of blocks, and a penalty mechanism that requires the attacker to apply exponentially increasing hashrate to make its chain canonical. The study demonstrates that ADESS can increase the expected cost of a double-spend attack and, under certain settings, render the expected profit of such an attack negative.
