The research investigates the placebo effect in Human-AI interaction. It shows that even if participants were informed that an AI would decrease their performance, they still performed better when they believed an AI was present, even though no AI was actually involved in any condition. This suggests that expectations regarding AI can significantly influence performance, and these expectations are robust even against negative descriptions. The study also highlights the need for a behavioral marker for designing adaptive AI interfaces that enhance decision-making, considering the placebo responses.
