This article presents a new text rendering method called Grammar-Preserving Text Saliency Modulation (GP-TSM). GP-TSM uses a unique sentence compression method to identify levels of detail beyond the core meaning of a text, de-emphasizing them by rendering in lighter shades of gray. This method helps to make important information more salient and improves the efficiency of reading and understanding text. In a lab study, participants preferred GP-TSM over existing text rendering methods and answered reading comprehension questions more efficiently.
