This article presents a new calibration system and algorithm design for micro scanning mirrors (MSMs), which are vital in many active sensors used in robotic applications. The design employs a minimal 2-laser beam approach and a new algorithm that uses reflection principle to accurately measure MSM poses. A self-synchronizing periodicity-based model fitting calibration approach was proposed to establish the mapping between Hall sensor readings and MSM poses. The system and algorithm were both developed and implemented to achieve an MSM pose estimation accuracy of 0.020 with a standard deviation of 0.011.
