The paper addresses the gap in research on the positive use-cases of diversity through a diversity-aware chatbot. The chatbot was deployed in two student communities to explore people’s expectations and perceptions of diversity. Findings showed that people seek others with shared niche interests or are driven by exploration and inspiration when presented with diversity. Despite limited interaction with chatbots, participants found the engagement novel and interesting. This study contributes to the Human-Computer Interaction field by focusing on people’s diversity perceptions and expectations when interacting with a technological artifact.
