This paper investigates the impact of human-language model interaction on self-guided mental health interventions. The focus of the study is cognitive restructuring, a therapeutic technique to overcome negative thinking. The authors designed a system that uses language models to guide individuals through the steps of cognitive restructuring. The study found that this system positively affected emotional intensity for 67% of participants and helped 65% overcome negative thoughts. However, the system was less effective for adolescents, suggesting the need for tailored interventions.
