This research presents a new shadow model named Gaussian Shadow Casting (GSC). The model can reconstruct 3D neural characters from videos, with improved shadows and shading, even in challenging outdoor scenes with direct sunlight. GSC uses a Gaussian density model to cast secondary shadow rays efficiently with an analytic formula. It optimizes the light direction without any input from the user, resulting in fewer shadow artifacts and more realistic relighting in novel scenes compared to previous methods. The method enhances the applicability of posing neural characters in new environments.
