The paper introduces a novel concept of a growing robot, GREEMA, which can effectively assist in landslide disaster situations. These robots are designed to be compact and lightweight for easy transportation, but once deployed, they consume environmental materials like water and sediment to function and clear the disaster site. Two types of GREEMAs were developed and tested, a fin-type swimming robot and an arm-type robot that consumes soil to increase its body rigidity. The paper discusses the results of these experiments and the design theory of GREEMA.
