The paper proposes HelmSim, a novel simulator for fluid dynamics, inspired by the Helmholtz theorem. It introduces a HelmDynamic block, which breaks down fluid dynamics into more manageable curl-free and divergence-free parts. This corresponds to potential and stream functions of fluid. HelmSim integrates learned Helmholtz dynamics over time in multiple spatial scales to predict future fluid behavior. The paper suggests that HelmSim provides more physically interpretable results than previous velocity estimating methods and performs well in both numerical simulated and real-world observed scenarios.
