This article focuses on the use of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI), specifically ChatGPT, in qualitative research. The authors conducted a user study with ten qualitative researchers to understand their perceptions of working with GenAI. Findings revealed that ChatGPT was seen as a valuable collaborator in thematic analysis, enhancing coding efficiency, aiding initial data exploration, offering granular quantitative insights, and assisting comprehension for non-native speakers and non-experts. However, concerns about its trustworthiness, accuracy, reliability, and limited contextual understanding persisted. The authors propose five design recommendations to foster more effective human-AI collaboration.
