This study is aimed at understanding pedestrian behavior in critical traffic situations to enhance pedestrian safety systems. Observations were made using a camera-based system to derive pedestrian-vehicle interactions. The approach combined the metric post-encroachment time with a newly introduced motion adaption metric. Out of more than 11,000 reconstructed pedestrian trajectories, 21 critical scenarios were identified. The study found that critical interactions in which the pedestrian perceives and reacts to the vehicle at a relatively late stage can be extracted using the proposed method.
