The article discusses the slow integration of AI methods in pathology due to technical and regulatory challenges. The EMPAIA initiative, an open and vendor-neutral platform, aims to overcome these issues. It brings together pathologists, computer scientists, and industry stakeholders to develop interoperability standards, recommendations for AI testing, product development, and explainability methods. EMPAIA has successfully integrated 11 AI-based image analysis apps from 6 vendors, demonstrating the efficiency of a single standardized interface. It has also established a forum for stakeholders to share information on digital pathology and AI. The initiative continues to support standardization and broad implementation of AI in pathology.
