This research paper introduces Mathemyths, an AI system that incorporates mathematical terms into a shared storytelling experience with children. The system utilizes large language models to engage in free-form, creative conversations with children, effectively teaching them mathematical language in a fun, interactive way. According to a user study involving 35 children aged 4-8 years, Mathemyths was found to be as effective as human partners in teaching mathematical language through storytelling. The study also observed differences in how children interacted with different co-creation partners.
