The paper discusses a new method for designing sensor arrays with real-valued weights to achieve maximum directivity. This method simplifies the beamformer implementation and makes the beamforming algorithms more efficient. The method is studied in the context of linear and spherical arrays. The study shows that rigid spherical arrays are particularly suitable for real-weight designs as they don’t suffer from grating lobes. The theoretical developments are validated through a simulation study and an experimental investigation.
