This article investigates the use of life-size 2D video avatars in Augmented Reality (AR) teleconferencing. Existing methods of AR teleconferencing offer high fidelity but are often complex and costly, limiting their everyday usage. The authors propose a solution that balances fidelity and co-presence by using video avatars. They conduct a pilot study to determine the optimal placement of these avatars in small-group AR conversations, considering the Field of View’s (FoV) potential effect on user perception of proximity. They also implemented a prototype and conducted user evaluations to verify its effectiveness. Further quantitative exploration of FoV’s effect on avatar placement was done in a VR-simulated environment.
