The study focuses on understanding social discomfort in shared car trips and developing ways to address it. The researchers recorded nine families on drives and analyzed the interaction data. They found that discomfort can be physical or psychological, and proposed three strategies to address it: contextual mediation, social mediation, and social support. This work is essential in the design of interactive vehicular systems that aim to lessen social discomfort.
