The article discusses a study on the effects of user-matched avatar ethnicity and gender on the sense of embodiment in virtual reality (VR). The study tested four conditions: matching both ethnicity and gender, matching only ethnicity, matching only gender, and not matching either. The results show that matching the user’s ethnicity with their avatar significantly enhances the sense of embodiment across various aspects, regardless of gender. Matching gender also enhances ownership, suggesting that both ethnicity and gender influence this aspect. The study concludes that matching ethnicity affects self-location, while matching gender affects body ownership.
