TacticAI is an AI football tactics assistant developed by Google DeepMind in collaboration with Liverpool FC. The system focuses on analyzing corner kicks, one of the most direct opportunities for coaches to intervene and make improvements. TacticAI has both predictive and generative components, enabling coaches to sample and explore different player setups for each corner kick routine and select those with the highest predicted success rate. TacticAI was validated on a number of benchmark tasks such as predicting receivers and shot attempts, and recommending player position adjustments. The system’s suggestions were indistinguishable from real tactics and were favored over existing tactics 90% of the time.
