The paper explores the ethics of using Natural Language Processing (NLP) to automate or supplement the work of legal experts, particularly judges. It points out that while there are potential benefits to applying NLP in the legal domain, there are several ethical challenges. The authors argue that automating the role of a judge poses significant ethical issues, especially in common law legal systems where judges actively shape the law. The paper suggests that the role of lawyers may be a more suitable domain for legal NLP, as it presents fewer ethical challenges.
