The paper explores the importance of direct sound in human perception of spatial sound sources. The authors investigate the impact of ideal direct sound representation on externalization, specifically in the context of Ambisonics. The study uses the spherical harmonics domain to simulate an ideal direct sound representation within an Ambisonics signal and evaluates its perceived externalization in a listening test. The research concludes that enhancing the direct sound component can significantly improve the externalization of a first order Ambisonics signal.
