The rapid progress of foundation models has led to the prosperity of autonomous agents, which leverage the universal capabilities of these models for reasoning, decision-making, and environmental interaction. However, these agents’ effectiveness remains limited in complex, realistic environments. This article introduces the principles of Unified Alignment for Agents (UA2), advocating for the simultaneous alignment of agents with human intentions, environmental dynamics, and self-constraints, such as monetary budget limitations. The article reviews current agent research, highlights neglected factors in existing benchmarks, and proposes an initial design of an agent following the UA2 principles. Experimental results demonstrate the importance of UA2 principles, shedding light on the next steps for autonomous agent research.
