This article presents a study on the use of Virtual Reality (VR) for training in manufacturing skills, specifically drilling with a 3-axis milling machine. The authors highlight the limitations of traditional training methods and the potential of VR as a scalable solution. They describe the development of a VR training simulation that allows for open-ended practice and includes a safety module, setup and drilling tutorial, and a function to assess drilled holes against an engineering drawing. The study’s findings reveal that the VR training resulted in higher success rates, fewer mistakes, and less time spent compared to a control group.
