The article unpacks the interaction between humans and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in safety-critical industries. It provides a systematic literature review, highlighting the inconsistency and fragmentation in the research on human-AI interaction (HAII). The authors delve into various research areas including the terms used to describe HAII, primary roles of AI-enabled systems, factors that influence HAII, and how HAII is measured. They conclude that there is a significant research gap and urge researchers and developers to establish a standard HAII terminology, involve users throughout the AI lifecycle, especially during development, and customize HAII in safety-critical industries to cater to the users and the environment.
