Virtual Mirrors: Non-Line-of-Sight Imaging Beyond the Third Bounce

This study introduces a novel concept in non-line-of-sight (NLOS) imaging. The researchers identified that planar diffuse surfaces can behave specularly at certain wavelengths, enabling enhanced imaging capabilities. They coined these surfaces “virtual mirrors” and leveraged their behavior to improve NLOS imaging in two critical aspects. First, they enabled the imaging of single-corner objects with limited visibility angles. Second, they created a system for imaging objects hidden behind two corners.
