This article presents ‘Vistrust’, a multidimensional framework for understanding trust in data visualizations. The authors argue that trust is crucial in interpreting and making decisions based on visualizations. They propose a comprehensive conceptualization and operationalization of trust in visualization, distinguishing between cognitive and affective elements, as well as between visualization and data-specific trust antecedents. A large crowd-sourced study was conducted to quantify the role of visual complexity in establishing trust in science visualizations, providing empirical evidence for several aspects of the proposed theoretical framework.
