The research introduces a new form of literacy for the AI era called ‘prompt literacy’. This refers to the ability to generate precise prompts for AI systems, interpret the outputs, and iteratively refine prompts to achieve desired results. The study examined 30 English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students’ engagement in an AI-powered image creation project. The findings revealed that learners developed prompt literacy skills and perceived improvement in vocabulary learning strategies. The study suggests that prompt literacy is an increasingly crucial literacy for the AI era.
