This paper by researchers at the University of Bologna proposes a new framework for integrating active stereo principles into standard passive camera systems, without the need for a physical pattern projector. The framework projects a virtual pattern over left and right images, based on sparse measurements from a depth sensor. It allows for the deployment of a virtual active stereo setup in any environment, overcoming the limitations of pattern projectors. The approach improves the accuracy of stereo algorithms and deep networks in both indoor and outdoor environments.
