The study aims to understand the connection between female brain health and sex hormone fluctuations by quantifying 3D shape changes in the brain during these fluctuations. The approach used is geodesic regression on the space of 3D discrete surfaces, which characterizes the evolution of a brain’s shape. This method was applied to real brain shape data, producing the first characterization of how the female hippocampus changes shape during the menstrual cycle as a function of progesterone. This work is significant for comprehensive, practical shape analyses in the fields of bio-medicine and computer vision.
