This research study explores the use of eye tracking in mapping the eye vergence angle to the depth of real and virtual objects, providing an objective measure of depth perception. The study was conducted in three different environments: real-world, augmented reality (AR), and virtual reality (VR). It was found that the gaze-measured vergence angle was associated with closer targets and was stable regardless of the starting depth of previously fixated targets. The research suggests that eye tracking could provide a more accurate estimate of depth perception in XR environments, which could enhance user experiences in various applications, including surgery, military training, and education.
