Researchers from Tsinghua University and other institutions have developed a new technique called MindShift to tackle problematic smartphone use. This approach leverages large language models to automatically generate persuasive content, tailored to the user’s physical context, mental state, and app usage behaviors. The system was informed by studies focusing on the mental states behind excessive smartphone use – boredom, stress, and inertia. In a 5-week field experiment, MindShift improved acceptance rates of interventions by 17.8-22.5% and reduced smartphone use frequency by 12.1-14.4%. The system also led to a significant reduction in smartphone addiction scores and an increase in self-efficacy.
