The study explores how participants used various methods of communication to explore a remote location with a robotic partner. These methods included spoken natural language instructions, text-based feedback, continuous 2D LIDAR mapping, and static photographs. The study found that different strategies were adopted in terms of the use of these methods, and that these differences may be correlated with success in various exploration tasks. The researchers also announced the release of their unique multi-modal corpus of human-robot communication in an exploration context, known as SCOUT.
