The research reframes statutory reasoning as an analogy task, increasing the dataset size and interpretability. The statutory reasoning refers to the application of legislative provisions to a series of case facts. The authors use the StAtutory Reasoning Assessment dataset (SARA), and introduce a new approach where each instance of the analogy task involves a combination of two instances of statutory reasoning. This task is found to be as difficult for Natural Language Processing models as the original task.
