This research paper explores the impact of generative AI tools on the help-seeking behavior of computing students. The study, which involved survey data from 47 students and interviews with 8, found that while these AI tools are being rapidly adopted, they haven’t yet fully replaced traditional resources. The type of help-seeking resources students rely on continues to vary depending on the task. The study also found that effectively using generative AI for help-seeking is a skill that needs to be developed, with significant benefits for those who are better able to leverage these tools. The implications of these findings for the integration of generative AI into computing classrooms are also discussed.
