The paper ‘Travelers: A scalable fair ordering BFT system’ by Bowen Xue and Sreeram Kannan was published on 4th January 2022. It proposes a new system of Byzantine Fault Tolerant (BFT) fair ordering protocols named Travelers. The system aims to counter the issue of maximal extractable value (MEV) in blockchain platforms, where transaction order can be manipulated to extract value from users. The proposed system reduces communication complexity and introduces a new notion of fair ordering called probabilistic fair ordering. The authors argue that this approach does not require a dissemination network or direct submissions to all consensus nodes, making it more efficient.
