This paper introduces a method for the automatic detection, identification, and localization of lighting elements in buildings using Building Information Modeling (BIM) data. The BIM data is used both as input to acquire important data and output to provide information about the building’s state and conditions. This method aims to aid in energy-saving strategies since lighting contributes significantly to energy consumption. The detection system is improved with a new refinement algorithm and a new plane estimation, filtering, and projection step. The method was tested in five different case studies, yielding better results in terms of detection, identification, and localization.
