This research investigates how decisions to adapt or exchange a solution depend on the structural and surface features of the task. In a computer-based modular plant scenario, participants chose between modifying process parameters (Adapt) and reconfiguring the module setup (Exchange). The study found that the decision-making process is influenced by the costs of the solutions and the format in which this information is presented. The results suggest that an interaction of structural and surface features shapes Adapt/Exchange decisions.
